More than a tournament
In 2004, the Austin Shaolin-Do school will take our annual tournament celebration in a new direction. In keeping with the rich heritage of our Shaolin art, we are creating an event that encourages every student to interact, share ideas, and develop their skills. This new format will more accurately reflect the emphasis of our training and curriculum, which is not about competition. I sincerely hope each student finds the event to be exciting and something to eagerly anticipate in the future. We have increased the levels of participation and decreased the price. Even if you have never considered yourself to be a tournament person and avoided competition at any cost, think again about the spring festival. There will never be a better chance for you to test your limits and expand your self-image.
KIDS COMPETITION WILL RUN THE SAME AS EVERY OTHER YEAR
The only change will be the $10 decrease in price. You children will able to compete in sparring and kata. Every child will receive a medal for competing and at the same time that the winners receive their Place medals, so that they can feel good about their accomplishments, regardless of whether they won or loss.
ADULT COMPETITION
Sparring
You will have no less than 3 chances to spar during the days events. Knowing that you have a 2nd and 3rd chance will take pressure away from the competition and increase the safety and control factor as well. Don’t worry about how we’ll manage all this sparring. We’ll take care of that, you just relax and enjoy the experience.
Forms
Weapon and empty hand forms will compete together, however you will have up to three times to compete with a form. You will learn a lot about your forms by watching others perform them with their own emphasis and skill.
Workshops
I will be approaching several visiting masters and upper level black belts about leading short workshops covering their personal areas of skill. You will have up to 3 chances to learn from these visiting Shaolin colleagues. Our 1000’s of Shaolin-Do black belts are a great resource, but we must allow this type interaction to occur in order to benefit from our diversity.
Shaolin Showdown
Sparring and Kata competition will turn up to the normal level competition at the end of the general sessions. During the Showdown the top 4 students in each division will compete for 1st,2nd, and 3rd.
Evening Demonstration
From 7-9 PM get ready for our annual "Show-Stopping" matial arts demonstration. Spectators paty only $5 for the entire days events. |
